Capt. John Cary

Died, lately, at the residence of Thomas G. Lamar, in Barnwell district, S. C. Capt. John Cary, aged 63 years. Capt. C. was a native of Gloucester county, Virginia; his connections were among the most respectable of its citizens. At a very early period of his life, animated with a love of country, and anxious to support the cause of independence, he attached himself to Gen. Lee's corps of horse, and in several instances distinguished himself as a soldier and a patriot. The cause for which he so gallantly contended being achieved, he retired to the place of his natively. Soon after, with his family, he emigrated to Athens, in this State, where he resided many years, winning the affections and esteem of all who knew him, by his mild and amiable disposition, and easy and conciliating manners.
Ever alive to the distress of others, he never "turned aside" from distressing humanity, but "abounding in charity," always as far as he could, relieved its sufferings.
As a husband and parent, he was tender and affectionate;-as a master, kind and indulgent. He has left four children to mourn his irreparable loss, and numerous friends and relatives his departure.
